An article out in the Times today confirms my long-held belief that teaching math using real world examples is not only unhelpful, but counterproductive.

Best line: "Dr. Kaminski and her colleagues Vladimir M. Sloutsky and Andrew F. Heckler did something relatively rare in education research: they performed a randomized, controlled experiment."
Every time someone asks, "When will I/they ever use this in the real world," whether they are students, parents, teachers, or administrators, they misunderstand what education is -- conflating it with training -- and manifest its demise in schools.
